Pancreatic cancer is particularly elusive and deadly, with one of the lowest 5-year survival rates of just 5%. To improve diagnosis and treatment, characterizing its pathogenesis is especially important. This editorial illustration aims to introduce the topic to public audiences and raise awareness on the disease.
Here, one visual challenge was depicting the complex desmoplastic response that occurs in cancer progression of pancreatic exocrine tissue. The illustration uses a schematic 2D illustration style to show ductal epithelial cells becoming malignant in a clear but striking manner. For context, a diagram of the pancreas is included, as well as an explanation on metastasis, a dangerous threat for any and all cancers.
